Your Role and Responsibilities

In this role, you will have the opportunity to gain vocational experience through a temporary work placement. Each day, you will acquire knowledge by performing tasks as directed and being guided through your internal supervisor as well as the University responsible. You will also showcase your expertise by supporting ABB’s operations and enhancing personal education/employment opportunities.

Thesis Title: "Combining BESS and Thermal Long-Duration Energy Storage Systems for Industrial Decarbonization and Renewable Curtailment Recovery"

You will be mainly accountable for: 

  • Benchmark Thermal LDES solutions for industrial integration, focusing on TRL, efficiency, cost, sustainability and reconversion potential.

  • Develop hybrid system model: Create a dynamic simulation of a combined BESS + Thermal LDES system, including different energy pathway modules (electric-to-thermal, thermal-to-electric reconversion).

  • Optimization and scenario analysis: Design an optimization framework for sizing and dispatch, then evaluate system performance under various industrial load profiles, curtailment levels, and outage conditions to quantify CO₂ reduction, cost savings, and resilience benefits.

  • Report and presentation: Document findings in a comprehensive thesis report and prepare a final presentation of results and recommendations.

Qualifications for the role:

  • You enjoy working with modeling and simulation tools (Python, energy system softwares) and exploring energy systems for industrial decarbonization and renewable curtailment recovery.

  • Ability to show experience from projects or coursework in energy, optimization, or system analysis.

  • (Optional) Experience as a student researcher or intern in energy storage, renewable integration, or industrial energy systems.

  • Highly adept in at least one of: energy system softwares or Python for system modeling and analysis.

  • You are interested in problem-solving and sustainability, and you bring curiosity and analytical thinking to your work.

  • Currently enrolled in a Master’s program in Energy Science, Engineering, Physics, or a related field.

  • Comfortable communicating in English (written and spoken).

  • Eligible to conduct a Master’s thesis in Switzerland (via your university, valid student permit or subject to obtaining a valid student permit).
