In this role as Research Team Manager, you will supervise the investigations on power device technologies, ranging from thermal questions in power electronics or low and medium voltage switchgear up to dielectric optimizations. The team covers multiple aspects of power device physics and different maturity levels from initial technology analysis up to product-near research with deep expertise in experimental methods, physical modelling, and simulations.

Additional to identification and development of innovative solutions, the team supports technology implementation in ABB factories worldwide. The goal is to ensure technology leadership of ABB products, while strongly focusing on sustainable and cost-efficient solutions without compromises on performance.

This position reports to

R&D Department Lead

Your responsibilities

• Management of a research group with 8-10 employees
• Coaching of project leaders for scientific excellence and professional execution of R&D projects
• Planning and ensuring an optimal project portfolio for the team, focusing on a balanced long-term pipeline of low and high TRL activities
• Recommending, developing, and improving processes and procedures to enhance local operations
• Recruiting of new employees
• Overseeing and assisting with transfer of technology and knowledge between internal partners
• Contribute to a motivating and innovative working climate
• Manage the group’s laboratory infrastructure and control of workplace safety
• Carrying out own research projects
• Close collaboration with Business Area Research Managers
• Maintaining and extending network to relevant ABB Divisions as well as Product and Technology Management

Your background

• PhD in physics or engineering
• Several years of experience in industrial R&D and research project management
• Fluency in English and willingness to learn German
• Communication skills and interest in lively interaction within an interdisciplinary team
• Interest in new fields of research and technology, and in people management
